Simmons Middle School Weekly Newsletter 01.19.18




Simmons Supply Drive

It's the middle of the year and supplies are running low!  Here are some of the items you can provide to show your support:

-tissues                        -sanitizing wipes (Clorox, Lysol, etc.)            -Expo markers

-paper towels             -white and color copy paper                          -highlighters/markers

-notebook paper        -liquid glue & glue sticks                                -3 x 5 index cards  


Collection Bins will be located at the front office and the back carpool entrance from January 16th – 31st.  Please see your team newsletters for specifics.

8th Grade Transition Dates

Tuesday, February 6th:  8th Graders Visit Hoover High School (8:30 am - 12:00 pm)

Students learn about various high school programs including academies, advanced classes, fine arts, athletics, extracurricular activities and student life at HHS.  A tour of the high school will be included.  We will leave SMS promptly at 8:15 am. 

Friday, February 9th Hoover High School Counselors Come to SMS

HHS Counselors will provide an overview of 9th grade course selection and 4-year plans during math classes.

Wednesday, February 14th

9th grade course selection sheets/4-year plans (with teacher recommendations) go home with students to discuss with parents. For questions about a teacher recommendation, please contact that specific teacher.  

Thursday, February 15th: HHS Course Selection and Curriculum Information Night at Hoover High School

Hoover High School is proud to offer a diverse curriculum, and we want parents to be fully aware of the academic opportunities available. All parents of rising freshmen are encouraged to attend!

5:45 - 6:15: Families interested in HHS’s International Baccalaureate Program are invited to attend an informational session in the competition gym.

The following sessions will be available in the lunchroom:

6:30: Rising Freshman Information Session (rising 9th grade)

7:00: Academy Overview (rising 9th grade)

7:30: Earning College Credit while in High School (open to all grades)

8:00: AFJROTC (open to all grades)

Kindness Week 

Kindness Week/#PinkShirtDAY

February 26th - March 2nd

On Wednesday, February 28, 2018 (National Pink Shirt Day), we would like EVERY STUDENT at SMS to wear a pink shirt or something pink to stand up against bullying.  SMS has designed a t-shirt that will be available to purchase on for $5.00.

Pre Order your Simmons Yearbook before they are ALL GONE!

They are $50 and can be purchased through “My School Fees”, or you can send a check made out to Simmons to Mrs. Wood, our bookkeeper.  Remember, a yearbook is a piece of history, so buy yours today!

The BUC Stop

The school store, The Buc Stop, is located in the library and sells earbuds, pencils, paper and other school items. Most items are less than $2. The Buc Stop has also begun selling new books from Barnes & Noble to those interested.  If your child purchases a book from the store and uses a check, it should be made out to B&N. The school library will receive a portion of the sale. If you need more information, please call Mrs. Glasscock at 439-2142 or email her at


Box Tops for Education

Clipping Box Tops is an easy way to help earn cash for our school.  Each Box Top is worth 10¢ for our school!  Just look for the pink Box Tops on hundreds of products.  All you have to do is clip them and send them to school.  You can also download the Box Tops Bonus App.  Get details at   The money will help purchase physical education equipment and supplies.  See Coach Bean for any questions.

PlanetFundraiser: 2018 Big Give Opportunity is underway. PlanetFundraiser will donate $50 for every $100 we raise before the end of January. Remember to upload your receipts after you shop at your favorite places. It is an easy way for SMS to earn up to $250 free!

Community Service at SMS:

Students who earn at least 60 community service hours this year will be recognized during our Grade Level Awards Days in May.  Hours are to be documented on an orange community service card which can be found in the Grade Level Offices.  Community Service Cards will be due May 11th in order to be recognized at Awards Day.  For more information or if you have any questions, please see your counselor.

Repairs - If your device is currently in need of repair, please take it to your school to turn in for repair. You can submit a repair request via by selecting the service requests tab at the top right hand corner and clicking on repair request.


New students - All students grades 3 - 12 who have completed on line registration, agreed to a device, and do not owe fees for technology will automatically be sent a device. No request needed. The school will distribute the devices on their schedule.


Charger Request - If your student needs a new charger, please fill out a request form via our by selecting the service requests tab at the top right hand corner and clicking charger request. There is a $40 charge for all chargers and it is not included in the protection plan.
